The Strategic Vision Institute organized an In‐House Discussion titled “Weaponizing Water: India’s Suspension of IWT and its Implications and Challenges for Pakistan” on June 26, 2025. Following the Pahalgam incident in April 2025, New Delhi declared suspension of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) until Pakistan credibly and irrevocably abjured cross-border terrorism. IWT is a key agreement between India and Pakistan that has determined how the Indus River System’s waters were shared for more than six decades. The treaty remained a cornerstone in their bilateral relations, facilitating equitable access to water resources despite periods of heightened military tensions and enduring conflicts . The event encompassed a discussion of the implications of India’s ongoing and planned projects on the Chenab, Jhelum, and Indus rivers, with a focus on the challenges and policy options for Pakistan. The panel included: -Mr. Syed Muhammad Mehar Ali Shah, Pakistan Commissioner for Indus Waters (PCIW). -Mr. Ahmer Bilal Soofi, President, Research Society of International Law (RSIL) Closing remarks were delivered by Lt. Gen Sarfraz Sattar, HI (M), (Retd), Advisor, National Command Authority.
