NUCLEARIZATION OF SOUTH ASIA – CHALLENGES TO REGIONAL PEACE AND STABILITY

A series of webinars from 13th May to 30th May 2024

The first webinar “Indian Nuclear Program and Tests of May 1998- Challenges to National Security of Pakistan” was held on 13th May 2024. The first speaker for this webinar was Lt. Gen. (Retd) Khalid A. Kidwai, NI, HI, HI (M), currently serving as Advisor Development for the National Command Authority (AD NCA). The second speaker was Dr. Naeem Salik, the Executive Director at SVI. The session was moderated by Air Commodore Khalid Banuri, a practitioner, scholar and former DG of Arms Control & Disarmament Affairs (ACDA). The online audience mainly comprised the research teams of CISS Islamabad, CISSS Karachi, BTTN, CISS AJK, and Rabita International Forum, Karachi. This webinar focused on the key developments of the Indian nuclear program and tests in May 1998 while enlightening participants on the motivations and drivers of India’s nuclear weapons program. It also highlighted the rationale for Pakistan’s nuclear weapons program that restored the altered strategic balance of power in South Asia.
